2Definitely NOT what you'd think of as a lantern  Jan 25, 2009
First of all, I want to thank the reviewer on another link to this item that warned me that the LED's only shine from one side. That prepared me from some disappointment. But I went on the assumption that having LED's on one side of the reflector (only), would give me 180 degrees of illumination. WRONG! All you get from this light is a narrow angle (about 15 degrees of arc), directional light. So, if you were to stick it in a corner of your living room or large tent, all you get is an approximately 2 foot X 3 foot oblong-to-round-shaped light on the opposite wall, very much similar to the characteristics of a flashlight. SO, do NOT expect that this is some unique lantern, that when stuck in a corner of a room, will flood the room with 180 degrees of illumination. That isn't what you get with a flashlight, and that ISN'T what you get with this light. Think of it more as a stand-up flashlight. Now, since it's a 'Motor Trend', you'd think that you could hang it from the hold-down hook of you car's hood, and it would illuminate the engine compartment with light. WRONG! All it will illuminate is the underside of your car's engine hood. But I can say one nice thing for this thinly-disguised flashlight...it gives about a 5:1 duration-to-crank ratio which is far better that most crank flashlights. In conclusion, this item would probably be best for sitting it on the ground and nicely illuminating your wheel area as you change a flat tire. That's about all it would be good for.
